The first full day of summer should have us considering how we'll stay hydrated in the heat. Water is wonderful, but not always necessary.

Kristin Kirkpatrick registered dietitian of the Cleveland Clinic says you don't have to rely on liquids to stay hydrated in the summer heat.

"Some foods are over 90% water, so foods such as iceberg lettuce, spinach has a lot of water, asparagus has a lot of water and then, some of our fruits."

Kirkpatrick says iceberg lettuce is 96% water and contains potassium and folate. watermelon can also get some fluid back into your system on a hot, sunny day.

it's 90% water and contains cancer fighting antioxidants.

She explains eating a grapefruit at breakfast will help hydrate you because they're also 90% water and packed with vitamin C. Cucumbers and broccoli are high-water content vegetables, but if you're looking for something a little different, Kirkpatrick recommends re-hydrating with some kohlrabi (kahl-ah-rob-ee).

"Kohlrabi is both high in folate, as well as high in water content. so, kohlrabi is a great source for us to get a little bit of hydration."

Kirkpatrick says these foods could never replace a glass of water, but are good alternatives, or additions.
