Resistant high blood pressure is a type of high blood pressure that does not respond well to traditional medical therapy.

now, a new study shows the risk of resistant blood pressure may be significantly higher in people with severe obstructive sleep apnea, even if multiple high blood pressure medications are already being used.

Researchers looked at 284 people. 73 of them were taking three or more high blood pressure medications, including a diuretic.

Results show resistant blood pressure was found in 58 percent of the people with severe obstructive sleep apnea and 28 percent of those with moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

Researchers with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimate 30 to 40 percent of people who have high blood pressure have obstructive sleep apnea.
