According to the CDC, obesity affects 17 percent of all children and adolescents in the United States, but now Manatee County Schools lunch programs are hoping to make a difference.
Results of the new nutritional regulations implemented last year are yielding results
Principal Pistella said, "We have a lot of students with our new wellness program that have actually, been border line diabetic, overweight or they've had some asthma issues, and the parents have noticed that in many cases the asthma has subsided some of the diabetic symptoms have subsided because of the nutritional and wellness program."
When the program was first implemented, everybody thought the kids would be reluctant to take fruits and vegetables, but it seems not to be the case
While there are many healthy choices, you cant mandate that a child pick the salad over the cheeseburger, or the sweet potato fries, so maybe the next hurdle is eliminating these choices altogether.
But, we have come a long way.
