Times have changed when it comes to breast cancer treatment.
Years ago, breast cancer was treated one of two ways. mastectomy or lump removal followed by 4-6 weeks of breast radiation.
Now, treatment is evolving and becoming more personalized, because surgery and radiation may be performed just once, right in the operating room.
Intra operative radiation is done in the operating room while a patient is asleep. it’s a single, more targeted dose of radiation and only takes about 30-minutes compared to standard daily treatment which can last 4-6 weeks.
Because it’s more precise, surrounding tissues receive fewer damaging rays and that means fewer side effects.
