How parents choose ADHD treatments

When it comes to treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, there are options.

Now, a new study finds the route a parent chooses is greatly affected by the end result they’d like to see for their child.

Researchers at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia studied 148 children.  They found parents whose goal was to improve their child’s academic achievement often initiated medication-based treatment.

Parents whose goal was improving their child’s behavior and interpersonal relationships were more likely to choose behavior therapy.

Researchers say parents must be involved in the shared decision-making process with their pediatrician.
