Lunch time is not the only time parents need to find something for their kids to eat during the school day, snacks must often be considered, too.
"Some snacks will not only hold your kids over until lunch, they’ll provide a brain-boost, too." Said Amy Jamieson-Petonic, R.D. of the Cleveland Clinic. “100% whole grains, such as 100% whole grain crackers or pita chips, whole grain breads for a sandwich can increase memory and help you get through the day. If you have a test, if you’re trying to remember things, whole grains are a great choice.”
Whole grains have not been processed or refined, which means the beneficial fiber and nutrients are still intact, this can provide your kids with more energy and may boost their memory a bit. Vitamin B6 may aid the neurotransmitters in the brain. Bananas and fortified cereal are packed with B6 and the skin of apples contains a bioflavanoid called quercetin.
Quercetin can help blood flow throughout the body, including the brain and, berries provide a similar effect and yogurt may also be good on a big test day. Said Jamieson-Petonic. She explained, “We’re talking about non-fat unsweetened Greek yogurt would be a great choice. We know that yogurt is high in calcium and Greek yogurt is higher in calcium then regular yogurt. We know that calcium tends to increase concentration.”
Jamieson-Petonic concluded, these snacks are good both in the morning, or even the afternoon before an extra-curricular activity.
