Curing diabetes surgically

The benefits of bariatric surgery may be long-lasting, especially when it comes to type-2 diabetes.

A new study finds people continue to improve or reduce their diabetes as many as 9-years after their bariatric procedure.

Researchers studied the effects of bariatric surgery on type-2 diabetes in 217 people. They found 50% of diabetic patients controlling their blood glucose, an average of 6-years after their bariatric surgery. Specifically, 24% achieved complete remission, while the other 26% experienced partial remission.  In addition, one-third of gastric bypas type 2 diabetes patients had normal blood-glucose levels and were off medication more than five years after their procedure. There were also cardiovascular improvements, including lower blood pressure and better cholesterol levels.
