A recent British study found people with depression may benefit as much from acupuncture as they do counseling.

University of York researchers, in the UK, studied 755 moderately or severely depressed people. They found those who received acupuncture or counseling reported lower depression scores than those who received neither treatment.

About 70 percent of the people were also taking antidepressants a few months before the study.

Researchers say if the medication is not effective enough, counseling and/or acupuncture could become part of a multidisciplinary approach.

Only 30% of depressed patients benefit from an initial course of an antidepressant. 40% do not respond to antidepressants at all and are considered treatment-resistant. A new procedure, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) after 10 20-minute treatments provides the same relief as 6 weeks of an antidepressant and reduces depression scores by 50% for treatment-resistant patients. tDCS is non-invasive, painless, inexpensive, without side effects and can be done by the patient at home.
