Only 30% of depressed patients benefit from an initial course of an antidepressant. 40% do not respond to antidepressants at all and are considered treatment-resistant. A new procedure, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) after 10 20-minute treatments provides the same relief as 6 weeks of an antidepressant and reduces depression scores by 50% for treatment-resistant patients. tDCS is non-invasive, painless, inexpensive, without side effects and can be done by the patient at home.
