Is Your Child at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes?

  • 0

SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - According to Cleveland Clinic, doctors are finding that type 2 diabetes is growing rapidly in children in the United States.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found the number of young people (ages 10-19) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes has increased nearly 5% each year between 2000 and 2012.

Parents can take a few simple steps to ensure your child leads a healthier life:

                -Talk about good food choices

-Keep healthy food and snacks in the house

                -Eat more fruit and vegetables

-Eat less processed carbohydrates, such as cookies and candy

-Eat fewer processed and fast foods

                -Replace sugary drinks with water

It's important to remember that children and teens need 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

To make it fun, go for a bike ride with the entire family or take a walk around the park.

When the whole family participates, it will help reinforce good habits.
