Tick-borne diseases are on the rise.
There have been five tick-borne diseases identified for the first time in the U.S. since 2009.
One factor that's increasing transmission of these diseases is the increasing tick population. That's been spurred by an increase in prey animal populations.
Deer ticks feed primarily on deer and mice; those populations have been growing over the last several years.
There's not much you can do about that, so your best defense is checking yourself and your kids for ticks after spending time outside.
