Florida Opioid-Related Deaths Skyrocket

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WWSB) - As opioid-related deaths in Florida continue to skyrocket, Governor Rick Scott and lawmakers have deemed the public-health crisis a top priority during the current legislative session.

Scott hopes to spend fifty-three million dollars to address the issue, most of that money going straight to substance-abuse treatment.

Legislation is also moving in the direction to restrict doctors to prescribing between three and seven days' worth of opioids for patients with acute pain and would require physicians to consult a statewide database before prescribing pain medications.
