LIDO BEACH, FL (WWSB) -- With kids out of school these days, more kids will be headed out into the sun for the day at pools and beaches. It's a good time for a sunscreen reminder - because every sunburn that kids get under the age of 18, increases their chances of getting skin cancer as adults.
First, make sure you're getting "broad spectrum" sunscreen - it protects kids from both UVB and UVA rays. Look for titanium oxide and zinc oxide in sunscreens - the best sunscreen products have both of these. One sunscreen ingredient - oxybenzone - has caused some red flags over the years. Research has found it poses a health hazard. The chemical has even been banned on Hawaii beaches - it can cause the coral reefs to bleach - even die in some cases.
