Analysis calls into question advice that you should always finish antibiotics

  • 0

The current protocol is that you should always finish your antibiotics even if you feel better. Failing to do so, medical experts say, increases antibiotic resistance.

But a new analysis published in the medical journal The BMJ now claims that completing a course of antibiotics may instead increase the risk of resistance.

Researchers said the "complete the course" advice dates back to the very early days of antibiotic use and has little evidence to back it up. They said it could be leading to overuse of antibiotics, but many doctors are skeptical.

The study authors say more research is needed and this may not apply to all infections.
