Family home burns while they are at church

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - A Charlotte County house fire leaves a family homeless and sends a firefighter to the hospital.

Vadim Pustovit and his family were in church while the walls and roof of their home were burning.  "When we were in church we got a couple calls, but our phones were off.  We answered them after our service and the Sheriff's Department said the house was on fire.  By the time we got here it looked like it does now."

They've lost nearly every material possession they had; house, clothes, cars, and belongings. "It's pretty heartbreaking.  I mean all of our memories and we put in so much effort and time. It's all gone."

The State's Fire Marshal is continuing his investigation, but told the family a likely cause could be the home's central heater.  "They told us the heater, a/c unit went bad and basically the heater coils went bad and kept heating up until it caused the ceiling to catch fire."

The family says they are grateful for everyone who tried to save their house.  Charlotte County emergency responders kept the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with injuries.  "He was transported to the hospital.  He is in stable condition."  His name and what happened have not been released.  Department spokesperson Dee Hawkins says he should be fine but still a scary situation.  "These guys are like a family.  These men and women are like a family.  Certainly when one is injured it effects the whole crew and the department as well."

Fire officials told Pustovit that if the family was at home it could easily have been much worse.  "The wall from the heat collapsed on my bed."  As they try to figure out what to do next, they're keeping their faith.  "God works in mysterious ways.  We don't know why things happen, but they happen for reason."

The State's Fire Marshal says the home is a complete loss.
