ELLENTON - It's an Olympic dream come true, for not one but two figure skating pairs from the Suncoast; Saturday night the pairs took home gold and silver in the National Figure Skating Championship, winning spots to compete in the Winter Olympics.
At the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex this weekend, it was nothing but excitement and praise for their colleagues, who are now officially Olympians. Several staff members and students there say the skaters' Olympic bid is a fairytale come true, and they're happy to have a page in it.
For Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett, and Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig, their story begins not in a land far, far away, but at the Ellenton Ice & Sports Complex. "The entire staff, we pretty much shut the rink down and sat here and watched...we're cheering our family on," says staff member Crystal Curry.
Both figure skating pairs are going to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next month. ABC 7 followed Evora's and Ladwig's national championship bid in 2006 and again in 2008. Denney and Barrett struck gold with their new pairing. They've skated together less than two years.
Their Olympic bid is conjuring up comparisons to the Disney movie Cool Runnings, a true story about the Jamaican bobsled team.
Figure skating in Florida isn't the only unique thing about the new Olympians; not only do they train at the Ellenton rink, they also work there. "Amanda does all our deposits, works in our accounting department; Jeremy used to be our snack bar manager; Mark does everything from fixing our computers to changing the lights," says rink general manager Tom Lindemuth.
Their friends and family at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex say they'll be glued to their televisions this Winter Olympics, cheering on warm people from a warm state...owning the ice.
The Winter Olympics in Vancouver start February 12th.
