MANATEE COUNTY - The Tallevast community is working a new green initiative; the children at the Tallevast Community Center are decorating tin cans that will soon be attached to a fence. They're building a garden so they can grow and eat their own fruits and vegetables.
But they'll go to any extent they can to avoid planting food they eat in the ground. Back in 2000, it was discovered that the ground water was contaminated in the community by an old beryllium plant.
The center plans on using rainwater collected in barrels.
Organizers say the green wall program is something the whole community can benefit from. "We're trying to make it as much green as possible and self sustaining where we don't have to go out and spend any money, so the kids and families can see you can do this all within your own home," says project director Margarett Essaw.
Several local business have given donations to make the garden a reality.
The public is invited to come out and watch the wall go up this Sunday from 4pm-6pm at the Tallevast Community Center, located at 7727 17th Street Court East. There will be organic gardening and green information packages, along with food and beverages.
