County revisits talks with Orioles

SARASOTA - Just when you thought it was over, they bring it back again.  Spring training could be back in play in Sarasota County.

County commissioners voted Wednesday to re-open negotiations with the Baltimore Orioles one last time.  The move comes after the team contacted county officials early Wednesday afternoon to say the Orioles are still interested in coming to Sarasota.

Commissioners would commit more than $28 million to upgrading Ed Smith Stadium and the training facilities.  Tourist tax dollars would be used.

The county wants a 30-year deal with the team and a Cal Ripken Baseball Academy commitment.

But the details will have to be worked out quickly.  Commissioners want a preliminary agreement done with the Orioles and the City of Sarasota, which owns the stadium, by its next meeting on May 26th.
