On 10th anniversary of unsolved murder, a family has hope

SARASOTA - One Sarasota family is taking great hope from seeing John Allaman's 30-year old cold case murder solved.

Deborah Dalzell was found murdered in her Sarasota home ten years ago.  Her killer was never found, but Sarasota County Sheriff's detectives continue to work on the case.  Her family believes her killer will be found and punished.

47-year-old Deborah Dalzell was found murdered in her home on March 30th of 1999.  On the anniversary of her death, the family ran her picture in the paper...hoping to flush out her killer.

"I'm thinking that maybe someone will see it, and someone will say 'oh that family...I must do something.'  And maybe they know something, and maybe it will hit their conscience," says Marilyn Dalzell, the victim's mother.

The Colony Meadows neighborhood was still under construction back in 1999, and Deborah's was one of the few occupied homes.  Her mother moved into the home after her death and replaced the screen where the killer broke in.  "We did, we put in blocks where there was screen, where the person had entered into and made a little safer."

Deborah's family says they can never rest until her killer is caught.  They say they want to give her this one thing.  "Justice.  You know Deborah was an attorney, and we couldn't protect her," says sister Peggy Thistle.

And they are greatly encouraged to see the 30-year old cold murder case of John Allaman solved.  "It definitely gives us hope.  It gives that extra spark that sometimes through the years that have now passed...we tend to lose sight of that possibility," says Thistle.

It also gives hope to Sgt. Kevin Pingel.  He's the Sarasota County Sheriff's detective who's worked the case from the beginning.  "This case is frustrating because we have physical evidence in this case, but we have no one to compare it to at this point.  We have different databases that the evidence is in, but so far we haven't found a match."

But he believes that match will come.  And that's what keeps Deborah's family going.  "We can rest a little easier know that this person hopefully will be put away, won't do it to somebody else, and maybe Deborah can rest a little easier and we can rest a little easier," says Marilyn Dalzell.

If you have any small bit of information on this case, call Sarasota County Crime Stoppers at 366-TIPS.
