SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - Wednesday the majority of county commissioners voting to fire Administrator Randall Reid after less than two years on the job. Thursday, slow growth advocates are crying foul.
Those like Dan Lobeck with Control Growth Now argue that Reid was let go because he would not bend to developers, saying developers are looking to change the rules of the county's 2050 plan meant to outline future growth and who should pay for it. "Randy Reid was hired because of his high ethics. He is being fired because of his high ethics. He simply would not bend his knee to the demands of the big developers which seek massive urban sprawl at the public expense."
Commissioner Joe Barbetta says the argument is ridiculous. He says Reid was let go mostly because of employee morale and how slow some projects were to get done, including the Siesta Beach improvements and mowing contracts. He says the decision had nothing to do with development. "It's unfortunate that they continue that banter. There were no developers involved in this at all. We are all independent thinkers. All five of us. I can assure you I received no emails, no calls, nothing from developers."
