It might be a little gray today, but it was a colorful weekend with parties, music, home tours, and some special anniversaries, as well as a visiting celebrity in drag.
Everyone was talking about Rosie O’Donnell this weekend. The new Sarasota resident played a weekend of shows at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre. Her standup routine was as funny as her old days, as she with filled her act with funny stories about raising her adopted kids and even opened up about a recent heart attack.
The Junior League hosted Simply Sarasota Tour of Homes, opening up four different homes throughout the area. I took in the Good Residence on Bird Key, taking advantage of the ability to gawk at the waterfront home without feeling funny, all for a good cause.
“The purpose of the Simply Sarasota Tour is to help fund our Junior League mission,” says Junior League member Donna Polito. “The project this year is Menu for Nutrition which helps educate parents and children appropriate ways to eat and have a healthier way of living.”
Not to abandon healthy eating but they were serving cookies outside the home, however they were being sold to raise money for the cause.
It was a good week for live music, starting with an impromptu jam at MADE Restaurant Wednesday night, followed by Open Mic night with Kara Nally at Lelu Coffee on Siesta Key, proving that even a Sound Ordinance can’t squash a community of musicians.
And a great week for anniversaries. Beverly and Robert Bartner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Michael’s on East, while stylist Dylonn Cole celebrated 7 years in his downtown salon with a big bash.
Another bash was Ringling College’s Evening at the Avant-Garde which took a 60’s theme this year. Everyone got in on the Swinging 60’s style, with special props to Sak’s 5th Avenue’s Sally Schule’s take on Twiggy and ABC-7’s own Linda Carsen’s Hippy Chick. Guest of honor actor Richard Dreyfuss arrived in drag, giving us all an image that I’m not sure we’ll NOT get out of our heads anytime soon.
As always, if you spot any celebrities around town, snap a photo and send it to email@example.com.
