NEW YORK (AP) - The executive director of the Gay Christian Network says ministries that offered to help him become straight didn't work, and haven't worked for anyone else as best he can tell.

Justin Lee says he prayed for years that God would make him attracted to women instead of men and joined groups whose leaders described themselves as ex-gay. But Lee says he learned that while some had changed their behaviors, their same-sex attractions remained.

He says young people with unwanted same-sex attractions need to know there are many committed Christians who are gay - some who decide to remain celibate and others who believe the Bible passages on homosexuality don't apply to committed monogamous relationships.

Justin Lee describes his personal journey in the new book "Torn."
