Live Updates: 88th Academy Awards

  • 0

The biggest night in Hollywood is upon us! Coverage of the Oscars gets underway at 7:00 p.m. with a countdown from the red carpet, followed by the award ceremony at 8:30 p.m. — all of which can be seen on ABC 7.

Throughout the evening, we'll be updating this page with the winners of each category — from Best Picture, to Best Cinematography, to Best Sound Mixing. Eight out of a possible 10 movies are nominated this year for the top prize, with The Revenant leading the way with 12 total nominations.

We'll also be live-Tweeting along with the telecast. Follow @MySuncoast on Twitter and join in the endless stream of social media commentary!

OSCAR PREDICTIONS:

Critically Inclined: Oscar Predictions Part I

Critically Inclined: Oscar Predictions Part II

BEST PICTURE

The Big Short

Bridge of Spies

Brooklyn

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian

The Revenant

Room

WINNER: Spotlight

Analysis: Spotlight was on a lot of people's radars, and was clearly a movie Oscar voters would love. But after The Revenant won at the Golden Globes, and The Big Short won at the Producers Guild Awards (which has been a sure indicator for the Academy Awards the last eight years), Spotlight took a bit of a backseat. It's not shocking that it won, but it's a little surprising. Regardless, any of the three options were deserving (though Room was the best movie of 2015, in my book).

BEST ACTOR

Bryan Cranston, Trumbo

Matt Damon, The Martian

WINNER: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs

Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

Analysis: Leo finally gets his win. This was a sure thing since The Revenant was released in theaters last December.

BEST ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett, Carol

WINNER: Brie Larson, Room

Jennifer Lawrence, Joy

Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years

Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Analysis: I'll just say: had Brie Larson not won, my week probably would've been ruined.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Christian Bale, The Big Short

Tom Hardy, The Revenant

Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight

WINNER: Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies

Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Analysis: Stallone seemed to be the favorite here, but the Academy went with the surprise pick in Mark Rylance. He put forth a great performance in Bridge of Spies, but of those nominated, I would've loved to have seen Sly get the win here.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight

Rooney Mara, Carol

Rachel McAdams, Spotlight

WINNER: Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

Analysis: This category was the toughest to call. I predicted Winslet would win, but I'm happy to see Vikander take this one. She's one of the most talented young actresses around today.

DIRECTING

Adam McKay - The Big Short

George Miller - Mad Max: Fury Road

WINNER: Alejandro G. Iñárritu - The Revenant

Lenny Abrahamson - Room

Tom McCarthy - Spotlight

Analysis: Iñárritu wins the award in consecutive years. I was split between him and George Miller.
