SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - Next week, the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe launches it's fall season with "Raisin".
"Raisin" is the musical adaptation of the award winning Broadway play and movie, "Raisin in the Sun".
"Raisin" was nominated for 9 Tony awards and won 2, including "Best Musical".
For years, Nate Jacobs has wanted to bring the show here,
And finally he is making it happen.
Nate says, " This was one of the first African-American shows to appear on Broadway. This production examines intra-family relationships and conflict, as well as issues of poverty and racial and gender discrimination. Issues which still resonate in our country today. The score is simply fabulous, with a mix of jazz, gospel and blues. I really believe audiences are going to love this show."
"Raisin" takes place in the 1950's in South Side Chicago.
Nate says, "It revolves around a working-class black family aspiring to a better life after the death of their father. Hope is sparked by the arrival of a $10,000 life insurance check. However, conflict ensues when mother and son want to spend the money in different ways. Walter Lee younger Jr. wants to use the money to open a liquor business. For Mama Lena, however, the windfall means the opportunity to move out of the slums and finance daughter Beneatha's medical school education."
Those may not sound like issues to sing about, but the show won a Grammy for best score.
The West Coast Black Theatre brings Brian Boyd to Suncoast View to sing, "It's a Deal". He's accompanied by Brennan Stylez on keys.
"Raisin" is at the West Coast Black Theatre October 3rd thru November 11th.
