Whale shark sighted off Anna Maria Island

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Some boaters off the coast of Manatee County caught a rare glimpse of a gentle giant recently.

Take a look at this video of a whale shark making an appearance on the Suncoast. Tracy Gardner posted the video on YouTube, and says they encountered the shark some 45 miles off Bean Point of Anna Maria Island.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea. They can get as big as more than 40 feet in length.

No worries for humans encountering them; whale sharks like to eat plankton.
