MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A national organization has named Manatee County's Coquina Beach among the country's "35 Superstar Beaches", based on the cleanliness of its waters.

The Natural Resources Defense Council puts the list together based on beaches that have met water quality safety thresholds 98% of the time over the last 5 years.

“It’s a reflection of the years of work by Manatee County Government to protect and manage the waters in and around Anna Maria Island under the guidance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Estuary Program designation for Sarasota Bay, capturing all of Anna Maria Island beaches in that designation,” says Charlie Hunsicker, Director of Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources.

The NRDC tests nearly 3,500 beach locations in the U.S.

Only two other Florida beaches made the list: Fort DeSoto North Beach in Pinellas County, and Bowman's Beach on Sanibel Island.

ABC 7's Todd Dunn will have more on this story tonight on ABC 7 News.
