There is a big green day coming our way. The Beach Bistro annual St. Patrick's Day Parade takes place in Holmes Beach on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick's Day. This year that lucky green Sunday falls on March16.

The parade will assemble at Holmes Beach City Hall at 5801 Marina Drive and will proceed at a leisurely Irish strolling pace northward along Marina Drive to its juncture with Palm Drive and then north on Palm to the parade's conclusion at the corner of 78th and Palm. This route should permit traffic to circumvent the parade route area and proceed relatively unimpeded north and south along Gulf Dr. The parade will assemble at City Hall at 2:00 PM and "take off" promptly at 4:00 PM.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will feature the usual panoply of dignitaries, cyclists, floats, dancers, high school bands and pipe bands garnished with greenery and smiling faces. Parade founder Sean Murphy promises a "jumbo" surprise in this year's parade.

Those interested in participating in the parade should contact the Beach Bistro at 941-778-6444 or visit the Bistro's Web site, For safety reasons, no dogs may march in the parade because of the presence of other larger animals.

When asked about the founding traditions and noble lineage of his St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Sean Murphy said: "Like most better Irish ideas it was thought up in a bar. There are no noble traditions of which I am aware.

We started our first parade with three police cars, two horses, a guy with a big red boat and my kids and their friends on a green lawn trailer. We marched through the middle of town and no one had any idea we were coming. We seeded smiles along the way like flowers. That first parade was my favorite."

Murphy insists that the parade has grown dramatically. "It is now the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade south and east of Savannah, Georgia,” he said. "It may also be the only St. Patrick's Day Parade south and east of Savannah, Georgia." Murphy said he has been contacted by the Emeril TV Show. The production company for the celebrity chef expressed an interest in filming the parade this year in connection with the Beach Bistro and Emeril TV show that will be broadcast later in the month.
