HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY)-- Huntsville’s Sandwich Farm is bringing home the bacon – in terms of award wining sandwiches. Sandwich Farm's BLT won third place in the “Best Sandwich in the South” competition at the Merchants Food Service conference.
The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce says awards like this could mean big things for our community. Data from 2006 to 2011 shows that over 200 new restaurants have opened in Madison County and the numbers keep growing.
Patricia McCarter, a spokesperson for the Chamber said, “Anytime one of our local companies receives recognition for being a superior business, it helps our entire community because it’s another opportunity for the name of Huntsville and Madison County to be put in a national, positive spotlight. Companies want to locate or expand in communities that provide a good quality of life for its potential employees. We are very fortunate to be home to great businesses like Sandwich Farm.”
“When I grew up here, we had maybe five or six [restaurant] chains total. Now we have so many restaurants in the downtown area. It is nice seeing the local food movement come our way," said Brandon Cantrell.
What makes the Bacon LT sandwich unique is that the restaurant smokes and cures their bacon in house. They also dress the sandwich with fried mozzarella and a pickled-pepper mayonnaise.
“We are really excited about the future of restaurants in the city. It is really important that local food is not only supported but celebrated. It means that you are eating seasonally and it means that you are eating things created with love and made from scratch,” said general manager, Michelle Huguley.
The restaurant hopes to win first place next year so that they can qualify for even bigger national food competitions.
