SARASOTA - Authorities were able to safely recover a 3-year-old child that police say was kidnapped by the boyfriend of the child's mother.

29-year-old Robert Barrett was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery/Domestic Violence, Child Neglect and Kidnapping.

According to Sarasota Police, Barrett had just moved to Sarasota from Alabama, along with his girlfriend and her 3-year-old son.

Friday morning, police were called to a hotel in the 1800 block of North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota where the three have been staying.  When they arrived, the girlfriend appeared to be the victim of domestic abuse and told authorities that Barrett had taken the boy.

Police contacted Barrett over the phone and he told them that "he would never be found and that he wasn’t going to jail."

Police began searching the area with the assistance of air support and the U.S. Marshall's Office.  Barrett was located in an area just north of the hotel, and the child was recovered unharmed.

This investigation is still ongoing as there may be additional charges and warrants pending from out of state. Anyone with additional information about this case can contact Sergeant Born at 941-954-7025.
