Dr. Ed James joined ABC 7 in 1972 as a weekend news anchor. He's also spent the past 38 years as the producer and host of "Black Almanac," which airs Sunday mornings on ABC 7. "Black Almanac" is the longest airing, locally produced, public affairs program in the Southeastern United States.

Before coming to ABC 7, Dr. James served as a columnist and governmental reporter for the Sarasota Journal. He was also the writer/associate producer of "Positively Black," a weekly half hour public affairs program on New York's WNBC-TV. Ed also worked as an Editorial Assistant at the New York Post.

Dr. James also has an extensive background in government and public relations. He served as the Public Information Officer and Deputy Chief Investigator for the State Attorney's office for the 12th Judicial Circuit of Florida. His other experiences include: Public Relations Director of the New York Urban Coalition, and Assistant Director of the country's first Urban Job Corps, located in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Ed has always been active in the community, working with organizations from the Boys Club, NAACP, Coalition of African American Leadership, Sarasota Committee of 100, North Sarasota County Civic League and many more. In fact, Dr. James was honored with a Lifetime Service Award and a Freedom Award by the Sarasota County NAACP. He was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sarasota African-American Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. James lives in Sarasota with his wife Helen.
