WAAY-TV, the ABC Affiliate in Huntsville, AL, has an immediate opening for an experienced News Director who can build a strong team environment. The right News Director will have the opportunity to aggressively lead an Award winning staff in a highly competitive market that covers 11+ counties in North Alabama. Candidates should have significant local/regional news, sports and weather coverage experience. The position requires effective mentoring, developmental, interpersonal and recruiting skills along with strong journalistic instinct and integrity. Candidates must show thorough knowledge of current events and lead the production of newscasts that meet and exceed audience expectations. The News Director is responsible for developing the News department’s long term strategic plan for all news elements, including TV, Web, all Social Media and any platforms to be developed. A thorough knowledge of Nielsen ratings systems is a must, Rentrak is a plus. Must be able to analyze all available data to create focused content and in creating strong sweeps plans. Required to develop and manage the financial budget for the News department. Must be able to work with all departments to develop and maintain efficient workflow. The News Director must understand the News department’s role in the station’s overall strategic plan and goals. Previous news management experience is required. A bachelor’s degree is in Journalism, Mass Communications or comparable is required.
