VENICE, Fla. - Crews are ready to get to work restoring a island near the Venice Inlet that has been shrinking in recent years.
Snake Island sits along the Intracoastal Waterway just inside Venice Inlet, and is an extremely popular site for boaters to pull up and hang out at.
But after years of strong tides chipping away at its shoreline -- leaving it just a fraction of its original size -- a new project will hopefully stabilize the island.
This week crews will begin building a wall off the west side of the island. Dredged sand will then be used to fill in the space between and erosion-resistant vegetation will be installed.
ABC 7's Josh Taylor will have more on this story tonight on ABC 7 News at 5 & 6.
