SARASOTA, Fla. - I practically had to clone myself to cover every event this weekend. With unexpected surprises and a few locals making making it good, this one was a week for the books.

Perq Coffee Bar on Hillview serves up a mean cup of coffee by day, but this weekend they offered another treat when Black Diamond Burlesque performed a standing room only show in the coffee house Saturday night. Black Diamond has been offering these mini-speakeasy shows since August to popular success. Their next full burlesque show will be Valentine’s Day at McCurdy’s.

Speaking of McCurdy’s, new Sarasota resident Rosie O’Donnell had to cancel her stand-up shows this weekend due to a last-minute health issue. Apparently she suffered an abscessed tooth and needed to seek doctors care pronto. Luckily, the shows are rescheduled for March.

Our hometown hero Nik Wallenda was honored as Circus Celebrity of the Year this weekend at the Historic Asolo Theater Saturday night. Pedro Reis and Dolly Jacobs presented the award to Nik while the crowd was filled with a who’s who of circus royalty.

The arts and cultural alliance installed six public pianos throughout downtown his weekend and I am happy to say they are getting played... in a good way. People are stopping by these decorated pianos to enjoy the music and have a good time.

If you’re a wine drinker like I am, there’s a great reason to pop a bottle. Florida WineFest is launching a contest this week and splitting people into two teams, Red and White. Each team has a home base restaurant, State Street Eating House for Team Red and Mattison’s for Team White. Both restaurants are offering deals to their prospective teams as competition kicks off this week. I’m Team Red all the way, but you pick your team at redvswhite.com

And it was a good week for the Suncoast on reality television. Two of our very own are lighting up the small screen. Bradenton resident Sam Woolf made it past the first round of American Idol auditions with great praise from the judges, while Sarasota realtor Renee Oteri is a contestant on the latest season of The Bachelor. Of course, she’s sworn to secrecy, but I have a strong hunch that Renee makes it the top 3 finalists.

If you spot any celebrities or hot spots around town, send your pics to me at WhatsupJoey@mysuncoast.com.
