SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - In the Spotlight tonight, while folks up north are battling ice and snow, we're having an Orchid Show here on the Suncoast this weekend.

The beautiful flowers and plants that grow all around us here, are one of the things that make the suncoast such a great place to live. And the ability to grow orchids ourselves is one of the great joys of living on the suncoast. It's a hobby, actually a passion for many people . There are 4 orchid societies in our area. And they are showing off on some of the most beautiful orchids you'll ever see at the the Sarasota Orchid Society Show. The theme this year is , "The Love of Orchids".

Long time member and Sarasota Orchid Society Photographer, Monroe Kokin says, "Its our 61st annual orchid show. It's the largest in South West Florida."

And it's going to be huge.

Monroe says, "The auditorium is 100,000 feet. That allows us to bring 10 orchid vendors ,5 orchid suppliers, 2 artists, and many other people who deal in orchids."

There will be about a thousand orchids, grown by members of local orchid societies in Sarasota, Manatee and Venice. The Societies are competing for prizes for the best orchids. Then there will be another 3 or 4000 orchids for sale by vendors. It will give you a small taste of how many types of orchids there are in the world.

Monroe says, "There are approximately 200,000 species of orchids and over a million cultivated hybrids world wide. "

You can learn many more fascinating facts about orchids and learn how to grow them yourself . Several classes will be offered each day at the show. And you can be sure any orchids you buy here will grow here.

According to Monroe, "The orchid growers that we have coming in from all around Florida grow their orchids in this environment, and would not sell anything that couldn't be grown here."

so you can take some of these beautiful flowers home and grow them.

The Sarasota Orchid Society presents "For the Love of Orchids" at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
