Amazing Women of the Suncoast: Stephanie Roberts

  • 1

SARASOTA, Fla. – For this week’s Amazing Women of the Suncoast, we didn’t have to look beyond the ABC 7 newsroom. We honor Stephanie Roberts, co-anchor on ABC 7's Good Morning Suncoast.

Stephanie is deeply involved in youth sports. She also sings the National Anthem at many sporting events -- you can hear on her March 7th at 1pm at the Baltimore Orioles game at Ed Smith Stadium.

She's originally from Wheaton, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Growing up she played tennis, soccer, was an accomplished singer, pianist, and performer. "I caught the news bug when I took a studio tour with my parents of WMAQ, the NBC station in Chicago," she says.

"From that day on I started looking into it more…“what does it take to go into news?” I started taking writing and speaking, I majored in journalism, I went to Penn State."

After graduation, she landed a job as weekend anchor and weather reporter in Rochester, Minnesota. Next she went to Toledo, Ohio, getting a meteorology degree along the way, and moved to Cleveland. "In Cleveland I started at the CBS station as a weekend meteorologist and then became morning anchor."

She had her daughter while working there. Then she moved to the ABC station. "I was the morning meteorologist, and I had my son while I was working there."

When the family moved to Florida 8 years ago, she became the morning meteorologist on the Tampa ABC station, and spent a year filling in on Good Morning America before joining ABC 7.

“I celebrate my 20th year in TV in a couple of weeks, and I spent 3/4 of those years getting up at 3am."

It’s a schedule she chooses.

13-year-old Reagan and 10-year-old Ryan keep her jumping...and driving. “My son plays baseball, travels year round; my daughter’s a traveling soccer player. We travel endlessly together."

She's also a guest host on the Home Shopping Network.

Juggling all this has been tough for the single mom. But she recently found the man of her dreams...on the baseball field -- he's her son's coach, and he has 3 boys.

And so when the cameras roll every morning at 5am for Good Morning Suncoast, you know when you see Stephanie Roberts’ smiling face, not only is she an amazing woman, she's also an amazing mother.
