SARASOTA, Fla. – Jenny Wallenda, an extraordinary performer and the matriarch of the world-famous Wallenda family, has passed away.
Jenny Wallenda – the oldest daughter of high wire walker Karl Wallenda, and grandmother to Nik Wallenda – passed away at her Sarasota home this weekend following a lengthy illness.
Jenny was born in Germany and the family moved to the United States in 1928. At age six, she was sent back to Germany to study and she remained there through the hardships of World War 2 until returning to the U.S. to work with her father. She walked the high wire as an adult, and performed on bareback horses as a child.
Jenny has three children, all circus performers. She stopped performing at age 45.
Not even terminal cancer could stifle her spirit. In February of this year, she attended the performance of her family performing their famous pyramid at Circus Sarasota. According to her daughter, Delilah, at age 86 she was still playing on the wire.
On his Facebook page, Nik wrote in part: “She was an amazing woman who lived a truly incredible life. She will be missed everyday... in your honor, I will never give up!!!”
Jenny Wallenda was 87 years old.
Today we honor Jenny Wallenda as our amazing Suncoast woman.
