ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Chandler Cox rushed for three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 1:29 remaining, to lift Apopka past Weston Cypress Bay 53-50 in the Florida Class 8A state championship game Saturday night.
The game featured six lead changes. Cypress Bay (12-3) drove 67 yards on its final possession, but Jaranta Lewis' pass was intercepted by Rakeem Smith in the end zone.
Apopka (13-2) scored on six of its seven first-half possessions and took a 39-28 lead into halftime. Cypress Bay grabbed a 50-46 lead with 5:27 left in the game when Alex Montgomery fought off triple coverage to pull down a 22-yard touchdown pass.
Apopka quarterback Zack Darlington threw for 254 yards and rushed for 125. Montgomery caught nine passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, and Matt Dayes rushed for 170 yards and four touchdowns.
The 103 total points was the third most in the history of the Florida finals.
