Staghorn ferns are epiphytic plants just like orchids or bromeliads. That means they typically live on trees or tree limbs, but do not take nutrients from their host plant. They are wonderfully self-sufficient and even have symbiotic relationships with beneficial insects. They love the growing conditions in Southwest Florida and can often grow quite large – in some cases as large as 8’ or more in diameter. One of the most frequent questions gardeners at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens field are from homeowners wondering what to do with an unwieldy staghorn ferns. Good news is they are quite easy to divide up into smaller ferns and they can also be easily displayed in a tree to provide many years of enjoyment.
