Florida Portraits 1977-2005 Exhibit An exhibition of photography by J.B. McCourtney
Florida Portraits History is a fundamental part of who we are. It celebrates our past and potentially our future. Sarasota County’s history is especially rich in individuals with multiple talents, perspectives and ideologies. In an honest look at the people who have created Sarasota’s diversity, photographer and lifelong resident of Sarasota, J. B. McCourtney has dedicated over thirty years to capture the heritage of Southwest Florida. His forty-one portraits and accompanying narratives are a celebration of the area’s rich culture spanning the 20th century. They are likewise a tribute to many of the citizens who have helped make Sarasota County the distinct and notable place that it has become today.
This exhibition is made possible by the estate of Barbara Caren McCourtney, the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners, Kathy Dent, Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections; Barbara Ford-Coates, Sarasota County Tax Collector; Bill Furst, Sarasota County Property Appraiser; with assistance from Sarasota County Historical Resources.
J. B. McCourtney’s narratives are written from his perspective and draw from his interviews, field recordings and / or research with each of his subjects. These narratives do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of Sarasota County Historical Resources or of Sarasota County.
In the 1930s, rancher Mack Doss organized Sarasota's first rodeo. Doss is one of the individuals showcased in the exhibit in the Terrace Building.
