Love Challenges Law: Defrocked Minister Tells his Story
The next Freethinkers' Briefing will feature the Rev. Frank Schaefer who gained national headlines when he was defrocked and his ministerial credentials were revoked by the United Methodist Church in December 2013.
His seventeen-year ministry including his fourteen year pastorate at the Zion United Methodist Church of Iona, in Lebanon, PA was over. His crime was that he broke church law by marrying a same sex couple in 2007.
It didn't matter that his son was one of those married. It didn't matter that the wedding took place in Massachusetts where same sex marriage was legal.
Three of Frank's four children have a same sex orientation and his love for them exceeds his loyalty to unjust church laws. He is currently traveling and speaking extensively across the country to help change our nation's resistance to same sex marriage.
His brief stop in our community was made possible by the Gulfcoast Affirming Interfaith Network (GAIN) where he will be the keynote speaker at GAIN's Spring Service which is open to the public on Thursday, May 8, at 7:00 pm by the SunCoast Cathedral, MCC (Metropolitan Community Church), 3276 East Venice Avenue, Venice. UU Sarasota is a member of GAIN which is an organization of lay and spiritual leaders from diverse faith communities affirming the dignity of all persons inclusive of gender, age, ability, race, ethnicity, sexual identity or social status: by building fellowship among those communities, by shared works and by acts of social justice. GAIN meets on a monthly basis and conducts two service a year, one in the spring and World Aids Day.
If you are a supporter of same sex marriage your presence will be very helpful. If you are opposed to same sex marriage, just come and be open to his story.
