LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron has apologized for hiring Andy Coulson as his communications director, after the ex-tabloid editor was convicted of phone-hacking.

Cameron said after the verdict was reached Tuesday that he wanted to give a "full and frank apology" for having appointed Coulson.

"It was the wrong decision and I am very clear about that," Cameron said.

Former News International executive Rebekah Brooks was acquitted of the charges.
