Brothers caught on camera stealing & selling boat propeller & arrested -- One brother bonds out & steals kayaks using same car

SARASOTA, Fla. September 19, 2013 -- 11 a.m.

On August 23, 2013, a pair of brothers were caught on camera and arrested for stealing a 35-pound brass boat propeller from The Condominium on the Bay at 906 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota. They took the propeller and sold it to a local recycling plant. This was also caught on camera.

The brothers, Andrew Berberich, 24, of Bradenton and Spencer Berberich, 19, of Sarasota, were each charged with felony burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and felony stealing in stolen property. Andrew was also charged with felony defrauding regulated metals recycler.

Spencer remains behind bars at the Sarasota County Jail however Andrew bonded out and is now charged with stealing kayaks in Lee County less than a month later.

On September 11, 2013, Estero River Outfitters in Lee County, Florida, had eight (8) kayaks stolen valuing nearly $20,000. The victim found some kayaks resembling the ones that were stolen by searching Craigslist.

A witness told detectives he first met Andrew Berberich on August 24, 2013, when he bought the first kayak from Andrew. The witness told detectives Andrew called him on September 12, 2013, asking if he wanted to buy more kayaks. Berberich called again on September 13, 2013, asking the same thing.

On Saturday, September 14, 2013, the victim met with the witness in Sarasota and told him the kayaks were stolen. Sarasota Police officers were called and the witness immediately turned the kayaks over to the victim.

On Monday, September 16, 2013, the witness met with detectives again at the Sarasota Police Department, providing them with a series of text messages coming from Andrew Berberich. The text messages indicated he would pay money if the witness wouldn't call the police.

A sting was set up where the witness agreed to meet Berberich. Before the sting, Berberich called and texted the witness saying he was bringing him money for the kayaks. Berberich arrived in a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, the same car that was seen driving away in the propeller burglary in August. Another kayak was strapped to the top of the car.

Berberich has been charged in the City of Sarasota with felony dealing in stolen property and felony tampering with a witness. He's facing other charges, including larceny grand theft, from the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
