MLB-SCHEDULE

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees received a little payback in Toronto, one week after pulling off a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays.

Adam Lind smacked a three-run homer and had four RBIs as the Jays rocked the Yanks 8-3. Lind's round-tripper capped a six-run second that put Toronto ahead 7-0.

Marcus Stroman stifled the Bombers, holding them to a run and three hits while striking out seven in eight innings. He outpitched Chase Whitley, who was rocked for eight runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

The outcome gives the Blue Jays a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Baltimore in the American League East. The Yankees dropped to third place, 2 ½ games back.

The Orioles kept pace with Toronto by getting production from slumping Chris Davis. The Baltimore first baseman ripped a walkoff, three-run homer as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth to complete a 6-4 comeback against the Chicago White Sox. Davis was benched for the start of the game after going just 4-for-36 in his previous nine games.

Andrew Jones and Caleb Joseph also homered to help the Birds withstand Jose Abreu's (uh-BRAY'-ooz) solo homer and three RBIs.

MLB-BLUE JAYS/LAWRIE

Lawrie DL'd

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have put infielder Brett Lawrie on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right index finger. Lawrie was hit by a pitch from Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh) in yesterday's loss at Cincinnati.

The Jays also are without outfielder Jose Bautista tonight against the Yankees because of a mild strain to his left hamstring.

NBA-SPURS-DUNCAN

Duncan plays on for the Spurs

UNDATED (AP) — Tim Duncan apparently isn't ready to retire.

A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that the Spurs forward is exercising the option on his contract and will continue to play for San Antonio next season.

The 38-year old won his fifth championship with the Spurs in earlier this month, leading to some speculation that he could retire after 17 seasons in the league. But many also expected Duncan to return next season because he continues to play at a high level.

Duncan will make $10.3 million next season as part of a contract designed to allow the Spurs to surround him with top-flight talent.

NBA-ANTHONY

Agent says Anthony is on the move

NEW YORK (AP) — The agent for Carmelo Anthony says his client "loves being a Knick" but that the former Syracuse star is headed for free agency because he wants to explore his options.

The All-Star forward had a Monday deadline to terminate the final year of his contract and had informed the team he would do so.

NBA-FELTON

No jail for Knicks' guard

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors say New York Knicks' point guard Raymond Felton is expected to plead guilty in a felony gun possession case in exchange for being sentenced to community service and a $5,000 fine. Felton was in a Manhattan court when prosecutors outlined the agreement. The plea date is to be set at a June 30 court session.

WORLD CUP

Brazil, Mexico, Netherlands advance

UNDATED (AP) — Brazil and Mexico have secured spots in the knockout stage at World Cup by winning today.

Neymar scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the first half of Brazil's 4-1 rout of Cameroon.

Mexico scored three times in a 10-minute span of the second half to beat Croatia 3-1.

The Netherlands finished on top of Group B after shutting out Chile 2-0. Chile finished second in the group and also advances to the knockout round.

Defending champion Spain salvaged some World Cup pride with a 3-0 victory over Australia in its last match at the tournament. It was their only victory of the opening round.

WIMBLEDON-DAY 1

Djokovic, Murray open with wins

LONDON (AP) — Andy Murray made a triumphant return to Wimbledon. Traditionally playing the first match on Centre Court as men's defending champ, Murray breezed past David Goffin in straight sets.

Last year, Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years. He's bidding to become the first to retain the title since Fred Perry in 1936.

Top seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) had little trouble in his opening match, winning in straight sets. Also advancing were sixth seed Tomas Berdych (TOH'-mahs bur-DEEK') and seventh seed David Ferrer (feh-REHR').

Second-seeded Li Na (lee nah) and former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) eased into the second round. Five-time champ Venus Williams claimed her first Wimbleon victory since 2011, knocking off Lauren Davis.

American Sloane Stephens dropped her opening match to Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 7-6. The loss ends Stephens' streak of reaching the second week at six consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

HOCKEY HALL OF FAME

Class of 2014 is set

UNDATED (AP) — Goaltender Dominik Hasek (HAH'-shehk), forwards Mike Modano and Peter Forsberg and defenseman Rob Blake will enter the Hockey Hall of Fame together Nov. 17 in Toronto. They will be inducted with former referee Bill McCreary and the late Pat Burns, who will be enshrined posthumously as a coach in the builder category.

Eric Lindros and Mark Recchi (REHK'-ee) were among eligible players who were not elected. Recchi is ranked 12th on the NHL's all-time list with 1,533 points.

Also in hockey:

— Vancouver has hired Willie Desjardins (day-zhar-DAN') as their coach as their new coach. The 57-year old earns his first NHL coaching job after leading the AHL's Texas Stars to the Calder Cup. Desjardins succeeds John Tortorella (tohr-tohr-EHL'-uh), who was fired after coaching the Canucks for one year.

— The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Andrei Markov to a three-year, $17.25 million. The 35-year-old Russian had seven goals and 43 points in 81 games for the Habs last season.

— The Philadelphia Flyers have re-acquired forward R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets for Scott Hartnell. The Flyers also signed center Brayden Schenn to a multi-year contract.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

Play starts tonight

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The opening game of the best-of-three College World Series final between Virginia and Vanderbilt is tonight. Virginia is 52-14 on the season while Vanderbilt is 49-20. Both schools are in the finals for the first time.

SPORTS GAMBLING

New Jersey loses bid for legal gambling

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has left in place a ban on sports gambling in New Jersey, rebuffing an attempt to bring betting on professional and college sporting events to Atlantic City casinos and the state's racetracks. The justices did not comment in letting stand lower court rulings that struck down New Jersey's sports betting law because it conflicts with a federal law that that allows state-sanctioned sports gambling only in Nevada and three other states.
