UNDATED (AP) — There are two really good matchups in baseball tonight as the Nationals entertain the Giants and the Angels play in Oakland. In the National League East the Nationals top the Braves by seven games while the Giants are 3 ½ back of the Dodgers in the NL West. In the American League West the top team is Oakland, which has a two-game lead over the Angels. Tonight the A's and Angels open up a weekend series in Oakland.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Baseball could have its first 16-game winner of the season tonight. Adam Wainwright and his St. Louis teammates are in Philadelphia for a game with the Phillies. Wainwright is 15-7 on the season with an impressive 2.40 earned run average.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Second-round play is taking place today in The Barclays, the first of the four FedEx Cup playoff events. The leader after the opening round yesterday was Bo Van Pelt, by one shot over Cameron Tringale. Very early in the second day of play three players, Kevin Chappell, Brendon Todd and Keegan Bradley, have moved to six under, one shot in front of Van Pelt, who has completed just two holes. Top seed Rory McIlroy had his problems in the opening round, posting a 3-over 74.
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Tony Stewart will once again not be taking part in Sprint Cup activities. The former Cup champion has withdrawn from this week's event in Bristol, Tennessee, marking his third straight race in seclusion since he fatally struck dirt track racer Kevin Ward Jr.
DENVER (AP) — Veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere (zhee-GEHR') has announced his retirement after 16 NHL seasons. Giguere is best known for his time with the Anaheim Ducks, where he led the team to two appearances in the Stanley Cup finals. The 37-year-old spent last season with Colorado and goes out with 262 NHL wins.
