Consumer Alert - Discounts for wind insurance

Updated:

SARASOTA - Last year the state of Florida had a popular program to help make your home safer during storms.  That program has expired now, but you can still save some money.

The program was called "My Safe Florida Home."  It gave matching grants to people who added things like storm shutters and fortified garage doors to their homes.

Lawmakers are considering bringing it back, but you don't have to wait on lawmakers to save.

Agents with the Florida Department of Financial Services say pay for a wind inspection.  Contact your insurance company to find an approved wind inspection firm.  They can show you weak spots in your home and determine if you are eligible for discounts on your wind insurance if you make the improvements.
