SARASOTA COUNTY - It's the iPod of the automobile world; Small, cute and cool. The Smart Fortwo has been a common sight in Europe for years, but now Americans can get in on the fun. Saving money, space and gas...important attributes as we try to live on less.
Smart car fans are rushing to a Sarasota dealer - the only one on the west coast of Florida. "On Saturday, we've had people standing 4, 5, 6 deep waiting to get test drives."
While not the biggest, the Smart Fortwo is certainly the hottest new car on the market, and the smallest. Despite its diminutive size, the Smart is huge for the dealers selling them. Every car that comes into the Wilde Smart Center Sarasota has already been sold. In fact, most of the buyers ordered their cars months ago.
Pat Rager was one of the first in the area to get one. "It's just amazingly tight and nice to drive and when you put your foot on the gas pedal and you're ready to go, you mash on the gas pedal and it goes."
To give you some perspective on the small size of this car, a Toyota Camry is nearly 16 feet long. The Smart Fortwo: less than 9 feet long."
"A lot of people are buying it more as a second car, so they can leave their large car that takes a lot of gas and use this for short trips to the beach, up and down to the grocery store, out to the movies...whatever," says sales administrator Phillip Thrapp.
Prices start at less than $12,000 dollars. It comes with all the latest safety technology and it gets good mileage. "They're talking 33 in the city, 41 on the highway." And these days, good mileage is, well, smart!
Wilde Smart Fortwo salesmen say if you order one today, there's no timetable as to when it would be delivered to the dealer. But it will be a while.
