SARASOTA - The Sarasota County School Board is watching the state legislative session with concern. They've already had to send back $6 million, due to the state budget shortfall this year.
And they fear they may be asked to cut another 2-3% from this year's budget.
School Superintendent Lori White and her staff spent Monday in budget workshops trying to figure out how to protect the educational services for students and if they have to make further cuts.
Here are some of the ideas they've come up with so far. "We are looking at preparing for a different possible schedule for the high school level that will reduce staffing, reduce busing for Pineview and Bay Haven, a really bare-bones summer school program, a four-day work week during the summer to save on energy costs, as well as some reduction of non-classroom positions that may be necessary for the next school year," says Lori White.
White says it will help if lawmakers will allow the class size reduction mandate to stay where it is right now.
Every school has to have an average number of students per class. Next year they'll have a specific number in each individual classroom, and that will cost millions of dollars more.
