Governor Crist ties the knot in St. Petersburg, protestors speak out

Updated:

ST. PETERSBURG - Florida's most eligible bachelor is now off the market.  Governor Charlie Crist got married Friday night in St. Petersburg.

The ceremony lasted about 30 minutes, and then the Governor and Florida's new first lady emerged briefly and talked to the crowd.  200 friends and family were invited inside the church, and outside there were many more.

Under tight security, the First United Methodist Church in downtown St. Petersburg was prepared for the first wedding of a Florida governor in 42 years.  When the ceremony started, only invited guests were allowed inside.  No cameras.  After the wedding, we spotted cabinet members, the former Florida Governor...and even television stars.  "For a Governor of a big state like this to have a family wedding, it is a testament to them.  Wish them the best," said Geraldo Rivera.

And as Crist and Carole Rome were being united inside, the scene outside was anything but united.  Demonstrators saw the Crist wedding as a chance to draw attention to their message.  "My message and the message of my group is simple: congratulations Governor.  And we mean that from the bottom of our hearts.  When can we get married too?" asked Lorna Bracewell of Impact Florida.

Organizations like Impact Florida were out in front of the church.  The group supports equal marriage rights for the gay community.  "Governor Crist endorsed Amendment 2, which passed in November and deprived millions of Floridians of any possibility of ever having the right of getting married.  And we found it particularly ironic that just after a month after he passed the bill, here he is exercising that right that he support taking away from me, and people like me."

After the wedding, it was off to the Vinoy, a hotel in St. Petersburg for the reception.  Guests dined on caviar raised at a Mote aquiculture facility in Sarasota County.  The couple will honeymoon somewhere in Southwest Florida.

The Governor met Carole Rome at a dinner in New York City last year.  He proposed ten months later in July.  Both Crist and Rome have been previously married.  His first wedding was in 1980 and lasted less than a year.  The Governor is 52, Carole Rome is 39.
