Vigil held to remember beaten teen

Updated:

SARASOTA - A vigil was held Friday night to remember 18-year-old Gregory Kennedy, who was beaten to death outside a house party earlier in the week.

The vigil was held at Phillippi Shores Elementary, and Greg's family says this was not to dwell on what happened but to remember the person he was.

Hundreds of people showed up to remember 18-year-old Gregory Kennedy.  "My little brother, my best friend.  And we are all going to love him.  We are going to miss him a lot."

He was going to be a senior at Sarasota High School.  "Great athlete.  Good friend.  Made everybody laugh, smile, even in bad times."

The same day friends and family gathered, two 17-year-old boys were arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder.  Early Tuesday morning, a party at a house on Lalani Boulevard turned deadly when a fight broke out in the front yard.  Kennedy was struck in the head, fell to the ground, and when he tried to get up he was kicked in the head and face repeatedly.  Kennedy was taken to the hospital, but later died from his injuries.  Friday, two students from Riverview High School, 17-year-olds Michael Mendola and Simon Mihailovic are charged with Kennedy's murder.

The vigil Friday night was to remember the way Gregory Kennedy shined, and all he could have been.

School will be starting up again in a couple of weeks, and the school board did say they will have counselors available at both high schools, Riverview and Sarasota High School.  Officials also say they know nothing of a serious between the schools, but rather friendly rivalries through sports.

The two arrested teens are expected to have their first appearance in front of a judge Saturday morning.
