ROTC instructor arrested for having sex with student

Updated:

SARASOTA, Fla. - A teacher at Sarasota High School is in the Sarasota County jail, facing charges of Lewd and Lascivious Acts on a Child.  Police say the victim was his student.

Peter Williams is a senior at Sarasota High School and part of the Junior ROTC program.  Sarasota Police arrested his instructor, Demetrius Busby, early Friday morning.  "From the several different people that I've heard it might have been, they are all the type of people that don't like RO."

Investigators say a 15-year-old student admitted to being in an ongoing sexual relationship for the past year with Busby.  The boy told police this week that he and Busby had oral sex in a school office on several occasions.  The instructor is also accused of having sex in his home with the student.  "He had the appropriate credentials.  He went through our screening process and was finger printed so that we had no reason to believe that this person was suspect in anyway," says Gary Leatherman of the Sarasota County School District.

An automated voicemail from the principal to squash all rumors was sent out to students and parents Friday.  "The ROTC instructor, Sgt. First Class Demetrius Busby was arrested early this morning with allegations he had inappropriate contact with a student."

Police arrested Busby at a hotel where they say he was hiding out.

Looking at the JROTC composite, Williams can't figure out how something like this could have happened.  "He doesn't give any special treatments to anybody to give you a thought that he would do something like that."

Busby is being held with no bond.  He had been a teacher at Sarasota High School for two years.
